A ping test measures how long a small packet of data takes to travel from your device to a server and back — called round-trip latency. Unlike download speed, which affects how fast files arrive, ping determines how responsive your connection feels during gaming, video calls, and live streams. What is ping (latency)?

Ping is reported in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better. When you click "GO," the tool sends requests to a nearby server and averages the response time. Jitter measures variation between those responses — stable connections show low jitter, while congested WiFi or bufferbloat on your router can cause spikes that make voice and games stutter even when average ping looks acceptable.

What is a good ping for gaming?

For competitive FPS and battle royale titles, most players target ping under 50 msto the game's region. Under 30 ms feels excellent; above 100 ms you may notice input delay. MMOs and turn-based games tolerate higher latency — often up to 150 ms — because they do not rely on frame-perfect reactions. Console gamers on WiFi should still run a ping test online before blaming the game servers; local network issues are a common cause of rubber-banding.

What is a good ping for video calls and streaming?

Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet work well with ping below 100 ms and jitter under 30 ms. Live streaming to Twitch or YouTube cares more about upload bandwidth, but unstable ping can still drop frames if your encoder buffers. What is jitter and why it matters

Jitter is the inconsistency of latency over time. Imagine ping values of 20, 45, 22, and 90 ms in a few seconds — the average might be 44 ms, but gameplay would feel uneven. VoIP codecs and game netcode prefer steady timing. Reducing jitter often means using wired Ethernet, enabling QoS on your router, or upgrading congested WiFi. How to reduce high ping

  • Use Ethernet for gaming PCs and consoles when possible.
  • Choose the closest server region in games and speed tests.
  • Close background downloads, cloud backups, and torrent clients.
  • Restart your router and modem to clear stale NAT sessions.
  • Enable QoS or SQM on supported routers to reduce bufferbloat.
  • Test at off-peak hours to see if your ISP is congested.

Ping vs download speed — what's the difference?

Download speed is throughput: how many megabits per second you can receive. Ping is delay: how long each packet takes to make a round trip. You can have 1 Gbps download and still suffer lag if ping is high or jittery — common on satellite or overloaded WiFi. Conversely, modest 50 Mbps with 15 ms ping is excellent for most online games. That is why a full internet speed test should always report both metrics.
